At the indicated time, we'll meet in front of the Tourist Office in Caen to begin our walking tour of this beautiful city in Normandy, the capital of the Department of Calvados.
Firstly, we'll admire the exterior of the Hôtel d'Escoville and the Church of Saint-Pierre. This church dedicated to Saint Peter was built between the 13th and 16th centuries, combining Gothic and Renaissance styles to perfection. Can you guess how tall its bell tower is? We'll find out!
We'll continue our tour through the historic centre of Caen talking about William the Conqueror, who was the first Norman king of England. One of the main monuments in the city linked to the monarch is Château de Caen. We'll pass by this fortress to learn about the various episodes it has witnessed.
Next, we'll follow the route to the Hôtel de Ville and continue our tour of the old town while learning about how the city experienced the Normandy Landings. This event, which took place on June 6, 1944 just a few kilometres from Caen, was a milestone in the history of the Second World War. We'll talk about this event and how this area of northern France was rebuilt after the war.
Finally, we'll learn about Caen's links with the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada, forged at the end of the war, and after a 1.5-hour tour, we'll conclude the guided tour in front of the Abbey of Saint-Étienne. This is a masterpiece of Norman architecture in which the remains of illustrious personalities are laid to rest. The most outstanding tomb is that of William I of England, who died in the Norman city of Rouen on September 9, 1087.
