History of Fushimi Inari Taisha

Founded in 711 AD by the Hata clan, the shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto deity of rice, sake, and prosperity, and predates Kyoto itself as a capital. The famous gates on Mount Inari were donated over centuries by individuals and businesses in gratitude for good fortune, a tradition that took off in the Edo period and still continues today. The stone foxes, or kitsune, posted throughout the grounds are not decoration either: in Shinto tradition they serve as messengers for Inari, often holding a key, a grain of rice, or a sacred jewel in their mouths.
