If you're in Oaxaca for multiple days and want to explore the outskirts with an English-speaking guide just for yourselves, book one of our private tours. They all included pickup and drop-off to and from your hotel, transport in a private vehicle and last between 8 and 9 hours.
The following explains the particularities of each tour:
Monte Albán, San Martín Tilcajete and San Bartolo Coyotepec (8 hours)
On this tour we'll travel to the former state of Oaxaca visiting the imponent Monte Albán archaeological area. We'll pass through the paths once used by the Zapotecs and see enormous pyramids while we learn all about this ancient civilisation.
Afterwards, we'll make our way towards San Martín Tilcajete, where we'll visit the craftsmen's house to learn about the alebrijes, handmade colourful creatures. Did you know that every piece tells a unique story?
Halfway through the day, we'll make a stop at a restaurant to recharge our batteries with a traditional Oaxacan lunch. With our energy regained, we'll travel to San Bartolo Coyotepec to visit a black clay workshop, these are natural pieces that are known as a sign of identity for their population.
We'll continue on a similar route on the tour of Monte Albán, Arrazola and San Bartolo Coyotepec.
Hierve el Agua and Teotitlán del Valle (8 hours)
The first stop on this tour will be at the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua, in the town of San Isidro de Roaguía. We'll enjoy some of the most impressive views of these waterfalls, which stand at 30 and 12 metres (98 and 39 feet) in height.
Afterwards, we'll make our way towards a traditional smoking kitchen to have an Oaxacan lunch. After this delicious experience, we'll travel to Teotitlán del Valle, where we'll see how the craftsmen create textiles to keep with the tradition of the olden days.
The itinerary will be very similar to that of the tour of Hierve el Agua and Teotitlán del Valle.
Mitla, Teotitlán del Valle and Mezal Factory (9 hours)
To begin, we'll head towards Santa María del Tule, where we'll see the tree with the widest trunk in the world. It has a diameter of 14 metres! Afterwards, we'll go to the Mitla Archaeological Site, one of the most important areas in Oaxaca. We'll see the ruins of the Zapotec town and learn about the archaeological, astronomical and engineering techniques used here.
The next stop will be at the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua and, after admiring the incredible views from this location, we'll be brought to a restaurant, where you'll be able to enjoy a meal at your own pace. With our bellies filled, we''' travel to Teotitlán del Valle.
To finish, we'll learn about the process of how mezcal is made and take part in a tasting as well.
This route will be very similar to that of the tour of Mitla, Teotitlán del Valle and the Mezcal factory.
